Mayor Bob Simpson says Quesnel City Council and taxpayers have done their part to address crime by adding both RCMP officers and bylaw officers to combat crime, but he says their efforts are being stymied.
“Our RCMP officers, sometimes in partnership with our bylaw, actually catch offenders and sometimes catch them in the act only to find out that the crown isn’t going to prosecute, or if they do prosecute, the individuals are let back into our community fairly quickly. It’s very frustrating for Council to see our tax dollars go into what we can do to increase public safety in our community, only to see the ball dropped when it gets into the court system.” ....

Quesnel City Council has directed staff to come back with a formal report on a full repair of the Johnston Bridge.
Council was presented with four options at a special meeting on Tuesday night.
Option A involved comprehensive repairs to the bridge for a 15-20 year lifespan.
It would bring the bridge up to a full legal axle load rating for 63,500 kilograms, although Director of Capital Works and Infrastructure Chris Cobin noted that the lifespan would increase if Council were to keep the 10,000 kilogram weight restriction that has been in place since October of 2018 after an inspection by engineers revealed that it had corrosion problems. ....

A communications strategy is in place for a referendum to borrow money to upgrade the Quesnel Rec Centre

The North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee approved a communication plan for the upcoming referendum at Tuesday night’s monthly meeting.
Residents will be asked to borrow up to 20 million dollars to upgrade the Quesnel Arts and Recreation Centre at a cost of approximately 45 dollars per 100 thousand dollars of assessment for 25 years.
One point that made Tuesday night by Mayor Bob Simpson though was also the cost of not approving the referendum.
“I would like to see a higher profile in the communication for the what if I vote no portion. I think it’s well placed in there in terms of a 6.5 million dollar nominal investment just to keep the same as we’ve got and upgrade the systems. Quesnel City Council is hoping to entice Central Mountain Air or another airline into once again providing passenger service by dangling a couple of carrots.
The idea was raised at Tuesday night’s Council meeting by Director of Community Services Jeff Norburn…
‘That we encourage commercial air carriers to provide flights in and out of Quesnel by waiving landing/passenger fees with some conditions for a limited period of time due to COVID-19.”
Norburn said that they would hope to tie that into a commitment from the carrier to then purchase fuel when they were in Quesnel. ....
