Data centers becoming dominant force in Mesa

It may never rival Silicon Valley, but Mesa is fast becoming Data Center Alley.
Several global companies are at various stages of plans to start crunching and storing data in southeast Mesa.
Most people have heard of Google and Apple – RagingWire, not so much.
And many around Mesa have heard Apple already has a sprawling data center and Google is planning an even bigger one around southeast Mesa’s Elliot Technology Corridor, which runs along the north side of Eastmark.
But while the secretive Google is taking its time on a project Mayor John Giles and Mesa City Council were crowing about two years ago, RagingWire is already building along Elliot Road. ....

United for Mesa ends effort to repeal city's approved LGBTQ ordinance

View Comments
A Mesa group has dropped its efforts to repeal the city s recently approved nondiscrimination ordinance that extended protections to the LGBTQ community, the group behind the referendum effort announced Friday.
United for Mesa had collected 11,505 signatures in an effort to place the issue on the ballot. Those signatures cleared the city and Maricopa County review process earlier in the week, which triggered a five-day window where others could challenge the validity of signatures to try to stop the measure from making the ballot.
A legal challenge was expected to be filed Friday arguing the referendum did not have enough signatures to make the ballot, and United for Mesa said in a statement that it would bow out. ....

Giles delivers light-hearted 'State of the City' | News

Perhaps befitting an unprecedented time, Mayor John Giles gave an unusual “State of the City” address — delivered, like so much else during the pandemic, virtually.
In a corny spoof of Zoom meetings and binge-watching, Giles starts the video from his computer, wearing a trademark blazer and button-down shirt as he ends a mock meeting; then, after closing his laptop, the camera pulls away to reveal he is wearing shorts.
Giles then hits his phone, texting Mesa City Council members to rally them for the big “watch party.”
They then gather for a Zoom meeting, and “vote” on what to watch. ....

Dickey joins fellow mayors in celebrating Earth Day

Fountain Hills Mayor Ginny Dickey joined with nine other Arizona mayors for a new statewide collaboration celebrating Earth Day this Thursday, April 22.
There are many ways Arizona communities support the Earth, with the goal of inspiring residents to take action for Earth Day during the month of April and beyond.
As members of and in partnership with Arizona State University’s Sustainable Cities Network, Arizona mayors and communities are showing that there is power in unity and that they all have a role to play in ensuring the planet’s health now and in the future, according to the announcement. Collectively, communities can protect precious and diverse natural resources and secure a thriving future for the state and world. ....
