Loudoun Now A crowd returned to Leesburg’s courthouse square Monday morning to participate in the annual Memorial Day Observance, another sign of a return to normalcy following more than a year of pandemic limitations on public gatherings. The keynote speaker for this year’s program was Col. Phil Rusciolelli. The longtime member and past commander of VFW Post 1177 took the podium after many years helping to organize the annual event. In his remarks, Rusciolelli reflected on the patriotism and generosity of the Loudoun community, the roots of Memorial Day, and the importance of the service of the men and women serving in the military. ....
Loudoun Now The Leesburg Town Council is set to join other local elected bodies and community organizations in formally condemning last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol. Councilman Neil Steinberg has proposed a resolution condemning the deadly Jan. 6 riot. The resolution claims the events that day were “part of a larger effort to overturn the results of an objectively free and fair election.” The resolution goes on to call for the resignation of all elected officials who participated in the events that day, and specifically singles out Del. David LaRock (R-33). “Mr. LaRock has violated his oath of office by questioning in the face of compelling contrary evidence the validity of the 2020 election results of the State of Virginia and the United States thereby sowing doubts within the minds of many of his constituents. Mr. LaRock continues to advance an entirely debunked narrative of a stolen or rigged election, while every lawsuit and investigation has shown ....
Loudoun Now The 2020 presidential election attracted record turnout, including unprecedented early voting turnout, and ended with Joe Biden taking 61% of the Loudoun vote. It was the biggest win by a presidential candidate in Loudoun since 1988, when George H. W. Bush took 66% of the vote in his win over Michael Dukakis. A record 225,625 Loudouners cast ballots. Incumbent Mark Warner (D) won a third six-year term with a victory over Republican Daniel M. Gage. In Loudoun, Warner got 61% of the vote, a significant improvement over his 2014 race against Ed Gillespie when he won only 48% of the Loudoun vote. And, reported health officials afterward, there were no outbreaks of COVID-19 associated with polling places. ....
Members of the Leesburg Town Council raised more than $1,300 in their friendly Red Kettle Campaign competition, where they took part in the Salvation Armyâs annual holiday fundraiser. Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk and Vice Mayor Fernando âMartyâ Martinez, along with council member Neil Steinberg and incoming council members Kari Nacy and Zach Cummings, helped collect donations at the Leesburg Safeway and Giant grocery stores. Funds raised from the Salvation Armyâs âRed Kettle Campaignâ go to serve Loudoun County residents throughout the year. The group provides emergency assistance year-round, including food and clothing and help paying rent and utility bills. ....
