Posted On June 9, 2021 Rappahannock Community College’s Rappahannock Institute for Lifelong Learning will hold a course on “Using Windows 10 More Effectively” via Zoom on July 15, 22 and 29 from 1-3 p.m. The class will answer your questions and give you more confidence navigating your computer. Martin Bailey, instructor for the course, will show you tips and tricks for maximizing efficiency and competency. Students must have a working knowledge of their computer and basic knowledge of Windows 10. Bailey holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the College of William and Mary and a master’s in Computer Science from Virginia Tech. He is retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren and is an adjunct professor with RCC. ....
Posted On June 9, 2021 An auction is planned on Tuesday for the historical Hyco House in Mathews. Tours are ongoing by appointment for the upcoming auction of historic Hyco House at 10941 Buckley Hall Road in Mathews Court House. The auction, conducted by Tranzon Fox, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Built in 1813 and added onto in the 1830s and beyond, the house was most recently the home of furniture craftman Sam Forrest, who died on May 5. When Forrest bought the imposing white four-level house, he decided to re-name it “Haiku House.” Regardless of what it’s called, the house has a long history in Mathews, serving for several decades as a home and medical office for Dr. James William Dorsey Haynes. ....

Fifty-seven young men and women graduated from Mathews High School last Saturday with a “change in attitude,” a concept expressed by valedictorian Abbie Hudgins in her speech. “At the beginning of the school year, I found myself focusing on the negative components, even though they were far from my control,” said Hudgins. “I was fixated on the unfairness of the situation and found myself complaining about what could’ve been and what was taken from us. I was going through the motions of my senior year saying things like, ‘Next year will be better,’ and completely rushing through and throwing away each valuable moment of my senior year.” ....
By Kim Robins on June 9, 2021 A turbulent audience led to law enforcement being called into the Gloucester School Board meeting at the T.C. Walker Education Center Tuesday evening. The crowd was respectful for the first 20 to 25 minutes of the meeting during which several presentations were made, including gifts to the school division’s teachers of the year and to the board’s departing student advisory representative for the 2020-2021 school year. When board chairman Robin Rice opened the floor for a public hearing on the school division’s comprehensive plan, she began to get more than she asked for. While a couple of people did address the long-term, goal-oriented comprehensive plan, the majority of speakers were clearly not there to discuss that topic. ....
