Leadership Westerville: Class of 2021 creates online resource guide for older adults ThisWeek group An online directory of services for Westerville senior citizens is now available, thanks to the 2021 Leadership Westerville class. When the Leadership Westerville board and the class of 2021 decided to cancel Service Day, a day of service focused on helping seniors in the community, they identified two areas of need they could address as small-group projects to still assist senior citizens, said Matt Lofy, LW executive director. The first project that was launched in February was Westerville Snow Patrol, pairing older residents and residents with disabilities with nearby neighbors who volunteer to assist them with snow removal. ....
Westerville Chamber to kick off three-day Election Academy Bootcamp on June 3 ThisWeek group Those interested in seeking public office or being part of a political campaign can sign up for the Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Election Academy Bootcamp. The bootcamp will consist of three sessions from 6:45 to 9 p.m. June 3, 11 and 17 with the first two meetings at 670 Meridian Way, Westerville, and the third at the Chamber of Commerce, 99 Commerce Park Drive, Suite A, Westerville. The final session will conclude with a reception beginning at 7 p.m. with invitations extended to Westerville City Council members, the school board, state elected officials and county trustees. ....
On a normal Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Matt Lofy would eat breakfast with more than 350 Westerville community members and Black leaders, and the Triumphant Church of God’s praise choir would sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” But with COVID-19 deaths nearing 10,000 in the state, Lofy, the executive director of Leadership Westerville and member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Project, will celebrate from home. For the first time in its 16-year history, the organization’s MLK day celebration will be virtual. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929. He was a Baptist minister and leader of the civil rights movement, championing justice and equality from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His birth is celebrated each year on the third Monday of January, a federal holiday. ....
