COVID Eugene survey: 5 takeaways from officials' discussion on results

Around 2,200 people responded to three versions of a city of Eugene survey about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The city conducted three versions of the survey, spokeswoman Laura Hammond told city councilors during a Wednesday work session:
A survey conducted by Kansas-based ETC Institute of 603 residents via mail with an option to take it online. This survey was reflective of the community.
An online survey through Engage Eugene in English, which 1,513 people took. Respondents were more likely to be female and white and to make $60,000 or more a year, but there was an even age distribution.
A Spanish version of the Engage Eugene survey, which drew 118 respondents. Respondents were more likely to be female, between the ages of 35 and 44 and make less than $60,000 a year. ....

Two candidates are challenging the newly appointed incumbent for the Lane Community College Board Zone 1 seat that represents West Eugene, Veneta and Florence. Holli Johnson was appointed March 3 to the board and is running to keep her seat. She is the first African American person on the board in the school’s half century of existence.
Johnson’s interest in community colleges began two decades ago, when she walked onto the campus at Santa Barbara City College and asked for help. “On that day,” she says, “I knew that I was going to work in financial aid and scholarships. So I went out in the community and helped every person I knew in my social circle apply for financial aid and taught them the ropes.” ....

Put green to use on green energy
It’s good to hear that David Anderson of NW Natural is looking to the future. Too bad he is just focused on his company’s future profits. No one wants to see his customers (me included) freeze. We just want his company to stop trying to add more gas-dependent customers by building more pipelines.
NW Natural shouldn’t act like all those buggy-whip manufacturers that ignored the future and went out of business. It should think like the ones who innovated and stayed in business.
As Anderson knows, climate change is real, and responding to it is inevitable and urgent. Natural gas is not a bridge to the future. NNG Financial Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of NW Natural, should take those pipeline dollars and spend them now on investment in true green energy while it can make a difference. ....

Lane Community College Board of Education seats up for election this May

Four seats on the Lane Community College Board of Education are up for election in the May Special Election.
The seats are broken up by the areas of Lane County they represent. Three of the seats are currently held by board members. One of the seats is vacant because of a resignation and will be filled for the remaining months of the term (to June) by board appointment in early March.
Zone 1: Represents western Lane County, including west Eugene and Florence. This seat was vacated last month when Melanie Muenzer of Eugene stepped down to accept a position with the Biden administration in the U.S. Department of Education, according to a news release from LCC. ....
