Holli Johnson Two candidates are challenging the newly appointed incumbent for the Lane Community College Board Zone 1 seat that represents West Eugene, Veneta and Florence. Holli Johnson was appointed March 3 to the board and is running to keep her seat. She is the first African American person on the board in the school’s half century of existence. Johnson’s interest in community colleges began two decades ago, when she walked onto the campus at Santa Barbara City College and asked for help. “On that day,” she says, “I knew that I was going to work in financial aid and scholarships. So I went out in the community and helped every person I knew in my social circle apply for financial aid and taught them the ropes.” ....

Just as the Lone Ranger traveled through the American West fighting bad guys, Sorenson spent much of his time on the board of county government debating conservatives. He decided not to seek re-election in 2020, and on Jan. 4, Sorenson’s 24 years as a county commissioner came to an end when Laurie Trieger was sworn in to succeed him. He endorsed Trieger, a fellow progressive who he says was one of the most prepared candidates for the elected office. But if politics are to attract other qualified candidates, it needs to offer a reasonable wage, he says. ....
Credit Lane County & Better Housing Together Lane County Board of County Commissioners approved an affordable housing action plan conducted by Better Housing Together on Wednesday. The goal is to increase housing options and reduce the risk of homelessness. The plan includes a series of recommendations like loan programs, leveraging land for housing, and focusing on building smaller homes. Also suggested is partnering with faith-based groups in the area and local colleges and universities. Commissioner Jay Bozievich voted against the measure citing a lack of support for the private sector. “Where [are] the actions to. remove permit requirements, to make it easier to construct, to lower the infrastructure requirements in a subdivision?” Bozievich continued, ”It s incredible how much more expensive it is before you ever even build a foundation to build a housing unit in Lane County and in Oregon.” ....
