Volunteers seek votes in campaign for the future Share FINANCIAL backing, and votes of approval, are being sought to for a plan to gradually change the community-led guard at Point Nepean and its historic role in the defence of Australia. Members of the Friends of Point Nepean National Park group are “not getting any younger” and want to make sure their conservation work continues. The group has asked Parks Victoria for $13,769 for its project to encourage more people to become involved at Point Nepean. Group member Mechelle Cheers says the national park with its quarantine station, walking tracks, forts and gun emplacements is a “glorious, special place”. Backing by Parks could depend on the number of votes the plan receives from the public. ....

Plan OK for sure, but not all happy THE long-awaited landscape strategy and concept plan for the Rye foreshore was approved last week, but not before being changed to make it more acceptable to councillors. Deputy mayor Cr Sarah Race, whose Nepean Ward includes Rye, successfully added that a car park be retained west of the pier and that the rock wall be included in the promenade design to maintain the historical alliance with Napier Street, or its materials be used elsewhere in the redevelopment. Also in her amendments were that all-abilities play equipment be included, with a path connecting the Scout Hall car park and playground; the events and markets area receives three-phase power; that indigenous vegetation be planted, and that vegetation and boardwalks highlight the view line, and preserve the natural environment. ....
Council candidate wins seat on second count SUSAN Bissinger is the replacement councillor for Hugh Fraser in Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Nepean Ward. Ms Bissinger’s appointment follows Tuesday’s (13 April) recount of votes cast in the November 2020 election. Ms Bissinger, pictured, told The News that she was “looking forward to getting things done, or at least having a go at getting them done”. After being sworn in at this Tuesday’s (20 April) council meeting and with several meetings to go before council is scheduled to adopt the 2021/22 budget Ms Bissinger will have several opportunities to make known her preferences on council spending. ....
