FINANCIAL backing, and votes of approval, are being sought to for a plan to gradually change the community-led guard at Point Nepean and its historic role in the defence of Australia.
Members of the Friends of Point Nepean National Park group are “not getting any younger” and want to make sure their conservation work continues.
The group has asked Parks Victoria for $13,769 for its project to encourage more people to become involved at Point Nepean.
Group member Mechelle Cheers says the national park with its quarantine station, walking tracks, forts and gun emplacements is a “glorious, special place”. Backing by Parks could depend on the number of votes the plan receives from the public. ....

CAMPERS will be able to savour the delights of a night under the stars at the Old Quarantine Station at Point Nepean from mid-next year.

A BRONZE statue has been unveiled at Point Nepean National Park to commemorate former graduates of the Portsea officer cadet school who died during active service.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions the 18 March unveiling by former graduates Major General David J McLachlan AO and Lieutenant Colonel Robin A McBride, was broadcast online.
Of the 22 names on the statue’s plaque fixed to a granite base, 15 lost their lives in south Vietnam, four in the Philippines, two in Malaysia and one on the Thai-Laos border. ....

Fraser bows out after ‘differences’ with CEO

HUGH Fraser last week resigned as a Nepean Ward councillor on Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.
His resignation, just four months after being elected for the third successive time, took his fellow councillors, shire officers and constituents by surprise.
Mr Fraser’s position on council will be filled by one of five candidates who unsuccessfully stood for Nepean Ward in last November’s municipal elections.
The winner is likely to be known in about two weeks following a countback of votes by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
The five candidates in the running to fill the vacancy are Susan Bissinger, Mechelle Cheers, Mark Davis, Simon Mulvany and Gary Naughton. ....
