Bowling Green State University celebrates Peace Corps Week
When it comes to demonstrating a commitment to public service, one of Bowling Green State University s strongest partnerships is with the Peace Corps, which has been sending volunteers around the globe since its creation by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.
BGSU will celebrate “60 Years of Service” during Peace Corps Week, Feb. 28-March 6, highlighting the relationship between the two with a virtual reunion of volunteers.
Organized by Dr. Margaret Zoller Booth, professor in the School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy, and Evan Snapp, a Paul D. Coverdell Peace Corps Fellow graduate assistant and a Master of Public Administration student, the highlight of BGSU’s celebration will be a virtual gathering at 6 p.m. March 3 of University alumni who have participated in the Peace Corps. Former Clayton Chief Magistrate Wanda Dallas moves to Stockbridge law firm


STOCKBRIDGE — Former Clayton County Chief Magistrate Judge Wanda L. Dallas has joined the law firm of Meadows, Macie & Sutton in Stockbridge as “of counsel”. Her work with the firm will be a general legal practice with an emphasis on criminal defense.
Prior to joining the firm, Dallas served as chief magistrate judge of Clayton County for seven years hearing thousands of cases and overseeing the operations of the court.
As a courtroom litigator, Dallas tried more than 80 jury trials in her time as both an assistant solicitor for the city of Atlanta Municipal Court, as well as a senior assistant district attorney for the Fulton County District Attorney’s office. Dallas also gained extensive experience addressing employment issues while working with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office as its’ Labor Relations manager. She also previously served as an associate judge of the Fulton County Juvenile Court and as chief judge of the Riverdale Municipal ....

Shadan Albakua’s life was forever changed in June 2014 when the city of Mosul fell to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) insurgents.
More than 500,000 Iraqi civilians became displaced because of the violence, including Albakua and her family.
“We lost our sense of belonging and, after that, we became a different family,” she said. “After 2014, every family in Mosul City lost one of their family members either when traveling outside of the country or killed during the attacks.
“It was a traumatic experience to be away from my hometown and friends. One of the sad moments was when I graduated from college without any of my friends, and most of them were in the city of Mosul. Far North Mayor John Carter says the fire in Ahipara, which forced the evacuation of about 100 houses last night, is a warning about just how dry Northland is.
This is a warning to us. Fortunately we ve got away without loss of life, loss of property or injury, but every resident and every visitor to Northland has a responsibility to make sure this sort of thing doesn t happen again. It s a massive warning.
