Colonial Pipeline forked over $4.4M to end cyberattack -- but is paying a ransom ever the ethical thing to do? -- GCN

By Scott Shackelford, Megan Wade
May 27, 2021
It took little over two hours for hackers to gain control of more than 100 gigabytes of information from Colonial Pipeline on May 7, 2021 causing the firm to shut down its fuel distribution network and sparking widespread fears of a gasoline shortage. The decision to pay off the attackers was also made with apparent speed, but the ethical arguments involved are age old and the implications could reverberate well into the future.
Cyberattacks, including those on critical infrastructure in the U.S., are nothing new. Ransomware, a type of malicious software that locks access to a computer until a ransom is paid, has been a component of the cyberthreat landscape since the mid-2000s. But the Colonial Pipeline breach raised the stakes and highlighted the ability of ransomware to interrupt the vital services on which Americans rely. ....

The Indiana Department of Health really wants you to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
So much so that mid-morning Tuesday the state sent out an invitation to everyone in the form of a public safety alert, announcing that free vaccines are available to anyone who wants one from now through Thursday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Speedway clinic has both the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine available as well as the two-dose Pfizer vaccine, the only one approved for those 16 and older. One must be 18 or older to receive the Johnson & Johnson or Moderna vaccines. ....

Public consultation process approved for possible reopening of Ralph Bell elementary

“It’s an incredibly difficult decision,” trustee Heather Grieve said. “We really need the input of our community. This is going to be a difficult decision either way.”
Ralph Bell elementary in Valleyview was one of five Kamloops schools that closed in 2010 due to declining enrolment. With enrolment now climbing and many schools at or over capacity, the issue of reopening shuttered schools has come to the forefront.
Another long-closed school, Westsyde elementary, reopened in September 2019 after having no students in the halls since the spring of 2006. The school district spent $1 million to get Westsyde ready to host classes once again. ....

Grass looks to be greener for Little Green this spring

Promising Newcomers:
“We have a lot of incoming sophomores and freshmen who haven’t played at the high school level yet, so it’s a learning curve with teaching them and have them play with upperclassmen who have done it before,” said Trzesiara.
Biggest Challenge:
“Some of our biggest challenges this year are taking on so many young not as experienced softball players, thankfully our captains and upper classmen have really stepped up to the plate with encouraging them and helping them work hard to become better athletes,” said Trzesiara. “We also have a very small team due to COVID not a lot of kids have come out to play and a lot of the upper class men have graduated over the last two years during the Pandemic, so a lot of these athletes are going to be playing multiple positions during the season to help out the team.” ....
