Simi Talsania, a star performer, was born and raised in Mumbai. She began dancing at the age of fifteen. Simi was deeply inspired by Meher Malik s belly dancing which she saw on the show Just Dance . Simi learned belly dance under Veronica De Simas, who ran a company called Veve for three years. Then she became a part of the crew Kohl Belly Dance Movement, which the core members of Veve founded. In those two years, Simi got the opportunity to represent India in 2014 at the Belly Dance China. During an annual event of the crew, she met Tejasvi Patil, a.k.a. Tee-J whacking on stage, and instantly became a fan. Talsania participated in Dance India Dance Season 5, where she was one of the Top 30 on the show. Kathmandu, April 10 When Pinky Sapkota first saw Meher Malik, a popular belly dancer of South Asia, performing in 2012, she was enchanted. The grace with which Malik performed left such an impression on Sapkota that she felt an immediate connection with the dance, she says. It was like I was seeing a celebration of womanhood, says Sapkota.
Dancing wasn t something new to Sapkota. She had been dancing all her life; in fact, she was trained in salsa and bachata. Yet, when she saw Malik perform, it was as though she saw a dance for the first time. She felt happiness, passion, and intensity flowing inside her, and she immediately made up her mind that she would learn the art of belly dancing too-at any cost.

These questions were raised at a recent round table discussion arranged by TomoeArts, a Vancouver-based dance theatre company, supported by ArtsComeOnline and spearheaded by Shivani Jatar. Paris-based dancer-researcher Kavya Iyer was the moderator.
