When SESP junior Glory Aliu’s practicum went remote as a result of COVID-19, she was surprised that she had to remain in the Chicago area as a requirement of her unpaid internship at the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago. The SESP practicum, a graduation requirement, can take the form of a summer field-studies internship in Chicago, San Francisco or Washington, D.C. As Aliu scrambled to sublet an apartment for the summer, she said she did her best to find a place that she could afford with the $3,000 grant she was awarded from Northwestern Career Advancement as part of the Summer Internship Grant Program. ....
Hey Venus, The guy I’m seeing told me he didn’t wear condoms, but he said it was okay because he takes male birth control pills. Only thing is… I don’t think male birth control pills exist? I feel like I should confront him. Stephanie Dear Stephanie, There’s so much to unpack here, but let’s start with the facts. Best-selling author Tayari Jones said her book “An American Marriage” is about the intersectionality of marriage and race. As part of the annual Leon Forrest Lecture Series hosted by the African American Studies department, Jones was a featured speaker in the Tuesday evening event. “Sometimes people ask me whether or not this is a love story, or if it’s a story about injustice or a story about race,” Jones said. “A big part of what I try to do in this book is to say that these things are not separate.” The book, “An American Marriage,” follows a young woman, Celestial, and her husband, Roy, who was arrested for a crime he did not commit. Celestial struggles with their love, and part of the novel is told through letters between the two. ....
Evanston Township High School senior Jacob Brodsky presented solutions for local food insecurity that he gathered from his city urban gardening survey in a Thursday afternoon presentation. As part of his independent study class presentation, Brodsky delivered his results to community members, including 4th Ward alderperson-elect Jonathan Nieuwsma, 5th Ward alderperson-elect Bobby Burns and Joel Freeman, a board member of Citizens’ Greener Evanston and co-chair of Evanston’s Climate Action and Resilience Plan. The survey focused primarily on urban agricultural solutions residents were looking to implement, and guided Brodsky’s presentation. His slideshow suggested respondents’ input had a common theme of creating “a more resilient food system that isn’t as dependent on large scale operations” something he said is currently the norm. ....
When assistant director of Multicultural Student Affairs Christine Munteanu co-founded the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Staff Affinity Group in 2018, only 10 to 15 people attended each meeting. Now, the group has 170 members. ASAG is open to all Northwestern staff members who self-identify as part of the APIDA, or Asian Pacific Islander Desi American, community. The group seeks to build a sense of community and support institutional racial and social justice initiatives by representing APIDA perspectives and providing personal and professional development opportunities. Munteanu said the group began when staff realized that Asian Americans were left out of an initiative meant to support staff of color, because Asian Americans are considered an overrepresented group at NU. ....
