Makoto Fujimura Sings with God, Carries His Cross, and Awaits the New Creation

19.96
One of the most formative moments early in my artistic journey was hearing Andrew Peterson’s song “Let There Be Light.” I was in my late teens at the time, just beginning to grapple with the musical gifts that would eventually lead me to a career in composition. But as Peterson crooned the lyrics, “When your spirit is hovering over the deep / In the image of God just look into that darkness and speak,” I remember the lightbulb illuminating in my mind:
My creativity is an act of faith.
That singular notion has stayed with me throughout my life, fueling my creative work and giving me a sense of purpose. And I can think of numerous musicians, authors, poets, artists, and theologians who have similarly encouraged me along the way. ....

Commentary: Beauty out of brokenness: the Easter promise of renewal

Print
You’ll forgive me if I’m not in the mood for a peeps-and-pink-bunnies Easter, or even a brunch-with-bubbly-and-long-lost-buddies Easter.
In January, I met friends at the beach who were caring for an 11-year-old who had just lost her father to COVID-19 (her mother was busy making burial arrangements).
In February, I brought banana bread to a household rocked by the death of a young man whose mental health had unraveled and supports had crumbled under the pressures of the pandemic.
In March, I said prayers over and anointed the body of Michael, a beloved, brilliant 18-year-old boy turning toward manhood, a son of our church who was killed by person(s) still unknown. I heard the sobs break out anew at his funeral when his 9-year-old sister held the microphone to say she missed him. ....

To make is divine | Review of Art & Faith by Makoto Fujimura

Print this article
Near the middle of the artist Makoto Fujimura’s most recent book,
Art and Faith, we are told the story of 15th-century shogun Yoshimasa Ashikawa sending broken teaware to China for repair. The items were returned “fixed” using metal staples. The warlord, understandably dismayed, instructed his potter to search for a better technique, something that wouldn’t just
repair a bowl but
improve it. Ashikawa’s search, anecdotally at least, is the origin story of the art of kintsugi, or using gold to fill in the various cracks between pottery shards, “creating a work of beauty through brokenness.” For Fujimura, it’s also a symbol of the role of the artist in the world and for the role of human beings living in a fallen universe: not just to repair or curate, but to participate in the divine by using the broken fragments of our lives as the raw material for the creation of beauty. ....
