On the Town: Sister Cities honors Chickasaw governor

An international organization that works to foster relationships between U.S. and international communities with people-to-people exchanges and initiatives will honor Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby with its Distinguished Leadership Award.
Sister Cities International will present Anoatubby with the award during its virtual presidential inaugural celebration on Jan. 17. The organization selects recipients based on those who have made significant contributions to society through the communities they serve.
“Governor Anoatubby’s dedication to his community and the Citizen Diplomacy movement has shown that he is unquestionably a distinguished and outstanding global leader,” said Leroy Allala, president and CEO of Sister Cities International, in a news release. ....

Hopkinsville Loses Former City Attorney Christmas Day


A former Hopkinsville city attorney has passed away.
According to an obituary from Hughart, Beard, & Giles Funeral Home, 89-year-old Wendell Harmon Rorie passed away on Christmas Day after a brief illness. Rorie served as the city attorney from 1966 to 1982 under the administrations of Alfred Naff, George Atkins, and Al Rutland.
Rorie was born on February 7, 1931, in Big Rock, Tennessee. He graduated from South Christian High School in 1949 and Murray State College in 1953, where he served as president of the student body and received the Outstanding Senior Award.
He was also an Army veteran who served on active duty from 1953 to 1955 in the United States Army Reserve. He attended Vanderbilt University School of Law on the G.I. Bill and was awarded the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1958. He then opened a law practice in Hopkinsville with W.H. Southall in 1958 and continued in active practice for 57 years, concentrating on civil defense cases. ....

AHS group hopes to expand mental health awareness on campus

A small group of students at Ardmore High School is hoping to make a major impact in the lives of future Tigers by raising awareness of mental health issues. The students have undertaken the project this semester in hopes of presenting findings and recommendations at an upcoming school board meeting.
Lindsey Walker leads the leadership and management class of nearly two dozen and said a core group of about six students this year has taken more than a passing interest in expanding mental health awareness and resources.
“Their self expression in the classroom, it kind of pushed and motivated me to find resources outside of the classroom,” she said. ....
