Can you talk us through your career?
After a short stint at an advertising agency, I joined our family business in 2000, the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group (ESAG), to focus on marketing and communications. Since 2009 I’ve been Director of Retail, responsible for strategy and operational development of the Group’s international and local retail brand portfolio. It’s been a fascinating experience, as I’m the second generation of our 60-year-old business.
What inspired you to venture into philanthropic work?

Both my parents were role models and had traits that I wanted to emulate and build upon. During my teens and early twenties, I was greatly influenced by my father’s charitable projects across geographies spanning East Africa, the Gulf and across to the Indian subcontinent. He eventually went onto to build one of the UAE’s first official family-sponsored charity foundations. ....

'Faces of Hatta': New documentary to capture area's oral history


on Sunday by Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, chairperson of Dubai Culture
& Arts Authority (Dubai Culture). The documentary aims to capture Hatta s oral history through stories as told by the residents of the area.
The project, whose launch comes after a recent visit by Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed to Hatta, will document the area s oral history and cultural heritage, by drawing from the stories of people who have witnessed its change over the years, with the objective of preserving that history for future generations.
Hatta is an exclave of Dubai that sits on the bo
rder with Oman and is less than a two-hour drive from the city. ....

Experts have noted that the startup ecosystems in the Middle East and North Africa region should focus on their specialised resources and the advantages they bring to the table
Entrepreneurship that is simply focused on generating profits will slowly lose steam, especially with millennials and Gen Z consumers, who are very selective about supporting businesses which they feel are trying to make a difference in the world, experts said.
The theme of entrepreneurship with a purpose will continue to generate momentum, especially as global economies and communities look to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. ....

Emirati businesswoman donates Dh1m to neonatal unit at West Bank hospital

The Emirati businesswoman and philanthropist, Muna Al Gurg, donated Dh1m to a neonatal intensive care unit in Jenin, a Palestinian city in the West Bank.
The support is desperately needed in the occupied territories where newborns lack adequate access to specialised care. The project is being managed by the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, which has been working in the Palestinian territories for 25 years.
According to Unicef, around 12.5 per cent of babies born in the West Bank need neonatal specialist care. Infant mortality there is in line with the global average (around 17 deaths per 1,000) but the most common reasons for the deaths are premature birth and respiratory infection – caused from lack of access to care, including medical staff, equipment and medication. ....
