Spinal Trust celebrates Government's $110m funding package

“We’re very, very excited, it’s fantastic news.”
Wouters has been working for the New Zealand Spinal Trust for the past 10 years and became the chief executive in 2016 and said talk of a new spinal rehabilitation unit has been discussed for years.
But Wouters said other Government priorities have meant it hasn’t received funding until now.
“It’s certainly been needed and it’s long overdue.”
The trust provides support services for people with spinal injuries and is based at the Ōtara Spinal Unit in Bairds Rd.
He said he would like to see the new facility expanded to include at least 30 beds. ....

New Integrated Spinal And Adult Rehabilitation Unit At Manukau Health Park

A new
$110 million Spinal Unit and Adult Rehabilitation Unit in
Auckland has received the initial funding go-ahead from the
Government.
The new, purpose-built facility will
replace the existing Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit at
Ōtara and the General Rehabilitation Service in the Colvin
Complex at Middlemore Hospital, and will form part of the
$229.4 million Manukau Health Park super-clinic
redevelopment.
Minister of Health Andrew Little
visited Ōtara Spinal Unit today to announce the
Government’s funding, subject to an approved business
case.
“The patients coming into this facility have
experienced a life-changing event,” Andrew Little
said.

Three decades ago, former Queensland MP Rob Pyne dived off a sailing boat unaware there was a sandbank lying just below the surface of the pristine blue water.
Then 23-year-old suffered a broken spine - an injury that would confine him to a wheelchair and mean he could never walk again.
It s a day most people would like to forget but this week he was handed a bittersweet reminder of that sunny afternoon.
