While animal-based food processors experienced problems, vegan options abounded on local menus.

The Tyson Foods chicken-processing plant, wedged between Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital in Portland, experienced a COVID-19 outbreak in April and was shut for three days, mirroring infections at its other plants around the country.
But arguably the biggest animal-based food story in Maine this year was when state investigators found that a dairy farm in Fairfield had contaminated the groundwater, its neighbors, its cows and their milk with the toxins known as forever-chemicals. The contamination comes from sewage sludge, often laced with industrial waste, spread on the farm fields for years. Maine continues to allow the controversial sludge-spreading on conventional farms, though the practice is banned on organic farms.  ....

WEST PARIS The public is invited to a candlelight service at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, at West Paris Baptist Church, Church Street. Masks are required and there will be social distancing.

AUBURN The annual Christmas Eve worship service from the First Universalist Church of Auburn will take place on Zoom at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24. The link opens at 5:30 p.m.

As it is the practice of our faith to affirm the inherent worth and dignity of all people, we the First Universalist Church of Yarmouth decry the racist vandalism perpetrated on the Littlejohn Causeway in November.
We support the Yarmouth High School Black Student Alliance and are prepared to amplify their calls for action and restoration regarding this hateful incident and the just demands they make on behalf of their safety and the safety of all Black, Indigenous, people of color in the region. We look to the BSA as leaders in our work to dismantle racism in our region and within ourselves. ....

The 4th Christmas Chinese Auction was held recently in Dept. 8 at Starretts. The 176 items, donated by Starrett employees and local businesses, netted $3,525. Proceeds are distributed equally between the Athol Santa Fund, Orange Santa Fund and Children’s Hospital, Boston.
■The Athol Santa Fund received a boost of $342 to bring the total to $3,121. The goal is $11,000.
■Merchants in downtown Athol will offer late-night shopping Friday night, when many of the stores will stay open until 10 p.m. to accommodate last-minute shoppers. Armed with a cache of candy canes, Santa will also be on Main Street to visit with shoppers and businesses. Christmas carolers will circulate along Main Street. ....
