A tractor driver has been arrested for drug driving and possession of drugs after being stopped at a Garda checkpoint in Co. Donegal over the weekend.
Caught in possession of a “small amount of cannabis, the driver was tested for drugs at the checkpoint, testing positive to both cannabis and cocaine.
Local Gardaí based in Co. Donegal highlighted the issue, stating:
“Gardaí from Ballyshannon Garda Station stopped the driver of an agricultural tractor on Saturday night at a checkpoint.
The driver was found to be in possession of a small amount of suspected cannabis herb and also tested positive for the presence of cannabis and cocaine.
Gardaí say new cross-border travel fines will help them enforce Covid-19 restrictions.
From today anyone who isn t ordinarily resident in the Republic can be fined 100 euro for non-essential travel.
Each adult in a car will be issued with a fine, not just the driver.
Donegal Garda and Vice-President of The Garda Representative Association, Brendan O Connor, says this will allow officers in border areas to apply more equal measures:
Northerners to be fined €100 if they cross the border without good reason A Covid-19 checkpoint near Dublin airport last month. Picture by Niall Carson, Press Association
Northern Ireland citizens will be fined €100 if they cross the border without a reasonable excuse .
Gardaí said that fines will kick in from 7am on Monday under emergency Covid-19 powers.
A Garda spokesman said if officers stop a car which is making an unnecessary journey then every adult travelling in it will be fined €100.
The new measure aims to deter day-trippers and not people who work across the border or who have caring responsibilities.
