Ranchi: Acting upon the recent direction of Jharkhand High court, Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the district administration on Thursday started an anti-encroachment drive to get rid of structures constructed on the catchment areas of water bodies in the city. The officials have identified a total of 119 structures on the banks of Harmu river and on the catchment area of Kanke dam and they will be demolished within the next fortnight. Apart from that more such illegal structures are being identified and will be removed after following due procedures. On Thursday, they removed 23 illegal structures situated on the banks of Harmu river and Kanke dam. ....

Choudhary, 77, was elected from the Samastipur District Local Area Authority. He was admitted to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Patna about a week ago after testing positive for COVID-19, said Awadhesh Narain Singh, the acting chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council. Choudhary died around 11 pm on Friday while undergoing treatment, he said. Expressing condolences, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that Choudhary was very popular among the people and had a keen interest in social work. ....

Ranchi: Residents of Ghagra complained of environment pollution and said they fear contracting Covid-19 due to the round-the-clock cremation of infected corpses in the area. Corpses of the deceased Covid-19 patients are being cremated at the ghat for nearly a month now after the Ranchi Municipal Corporation owned gas-fired incinerator at Mukti Dham developed a snag and went out of order for several days. Kaushal Kishore Mishra, a resident of the area, said, “The mass burning of bodies is causing so much pollution that we are forced to shut our doors and windows. The strong smell arising out of rituals saturates the entire atmosphere.” ....
