NCDC’s training program for fishermen drawing huge response NCDC’s one day awareness cum training program for fishermen across states is drawing huge response. The training is imparted under the newly launched fisheries flagship scheme– Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMSSY). The Yojana aims at focused development and promotion of seaweed cultivation and value chain with requisite financial allocations. LINAC branches of NCDC are playing an active role in this exercise. Such programs were organized in Panjim, Goa and Morena, Madhya Pradesh, in which scores of fishermen participated. Earlier such an event was organized in Chandipur, Odisha in which Union Minister Pratap Sarangi participated. ....

In 2019 Ionatana Sasi (51) was caught with 144 undersize pāua he took at Eastbourne near Burdan’s Gate in Wellington. It was the second time in four years that Mr Sasi has been before the court for stealing pāua in this area. When MPI Fishery Officers asked him to come ashore, he dumped his catch bag in shallow water. Fishery officers retrieved the bag, inspected his catch, and found 156 pāua – more than 15 times the legal ....

Teck Coal, a subsidiary of Teck Resources, resolved the charges relating to 2012 discharges of selenium and calcite to a mine settling pond and Fording River from its steelmaking coal operations in the Elk Valley region of British Columbia. “We sincerely apologize and take responsibility for the impacts of these discharges,” Chief Executive Officer Don Lindsay said. Lindsay also said the company plans to further invest up to C$655 million over the next four years alone on work to protect the watershed. ....

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) had issued an Emergency Use Permit (EUP) which allows Fawligen to be used on the invasive pest. “The swift approval of the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ (DAF) application, prepared jointly with AgBiTech – the Australian company that developed and produces Fawligen – is a significant step in the battle against this voracious pest,” Mr Furner said. ....
