The Queensland Government has welcomed the emergency use approval of a biopesticide to combat fall armyworm (FAW).
Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) had issued an Emergency Use Permit (EUP) which allows Fawligen to be used on the invasive pest.
“The swift approval of the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ (DAF) application, prepared jointly with AgBiTech – the Australian company that developed and produces Fawligen – is a significant step in the battle against this voracious pest,” Mr Furner said. ....

New bioweapon in the fight against fall armyworm

There is a new bioweapon in the arsenal to fight against a small pest with a voracious appetite for Queensland s agricultural crops.
Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, fall armyworm arrived on Australian shores at the beginning of 2020 and has since been detected in Emerald, Clermont, Mackay and Dysart.
It eats more than 350 plant species including sugarcane, vegetables, sorghum, pastures and wheat.
The Agricultural and Fisheries Department has been given the green light to import Fawligen, a biopesticide which infects the caterpillar and its larvae with a virus.

Agricultural Industry Development Minister Mark Furner said importing Fawligen for research allowed the government to begin testing how it performed under local conditions. ....

Plans to import a biopesticide from overseas are in motion, in a bid to solve one of the growing pest problems for farmers in the Bundaberg and Burnett regions.
Sightings of the fall armyworm (FAW) were first reported in Australia, in January last year and until now, no imminent solutions had been found to combat the invasive pest.
Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers (BFVG) managing director Bree Grima said she encourages growers and agronomists to conduct regular checks of their crops for unusual pest activity.
There has been significant pest activity for FAW in recent months particularly with sweet corn crops but as these crops have nearly finished, we may see some relief, however it continues to be present in sorghum crops, Ms Grima said. ....
