Limiting our catch is one way to preserve marine biodiversity and to save the livelihood of almost two million Filipino fisherfolk. If everyone collects just enough fish for themselves, we allow the remaining fishes in the sea to reproduce. We consistently harvest fish faster than they can multiply. Because of this, we don’t allow fishes to grow and this will eventually keep the seas empty. This is why implementing fishing limitations and strictly monitoring fishing activities is critical. 50 percent of the Filipino’s protein diet comes from fish and with the proper use of our resources, we will be able to fight hunger and feed future generations. ....

It has been noted that fisherfolks have consistently been among the poorest sectors in the country, as they face the harsh impact of typhoon, fish kill, and marine degradation, among others. With this, the government has partnered with SU, BDO Unibank Inc., and US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Fish Right Program to launch a massive financial education campaign for fishermen. ....

Photo courtesy from BSP QUEZON CITY, Feb. 8 (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), launched a partnership program for the financial education of fishers across the country called Fishers’ Financial Education or “FinLit.” Together with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), BDO Foundation, and the Fish Right Program of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the collaboration offers training to fishers on topics such as saving and budgeting, supplementary income sources, and the proper use of micro-loans and micro-insurance to help break the vicious cycle of poverty and natural resource depletion “We aim to equip fishers and their families with prudent financial management skills and right attitudes toward money to help them cope with irregular incomes and other economic shocks that they typically encounter in their livelihoods,” BSP Governor Benjamin E.
