In 2015 only 14.2% of characters in children’s books represented minorities; this number covered four different nationalities while 73.3% of characters were white. Meanwhile, 12.5% of characters were animals or inanimate objects. What does this mean? This means that there were more books about rabbits and bulldozers than about any other non-white race. With that in mind, the Minot Public Library began a Diversity Audit in 2020 to look deeply at their collection of books see if the collection represented diversity in a thoughtful way.
Why does diversity and representation matter for public libraries? Public libraries are intended to serve, and thus represent, everyone within a community. During the Minot Public Library’s November “Sweater Weather” program, staff reached out to local indigenous community members and asked them “When did you first read a book by an indigenous author?” One person responded stating that she didn’t read a book by an in ....

In wake of the announcement that six of Dr. Seuss books will no longer be published, the Minot Public Library says the number of people on the waitlist for the author s children s books has greatly increased, including the six controversial titles.

Minot Public Library Teen Librarian Pam Carswell shows off a 3-D soap dish. Kids will make dishes like it during a meeting on March 9. Their designs will be printed for free using the library’s 3D printer. Masks are required for the in-person events.
After months of virtual programming, the Minot Public Library will finally be offering some in-person programs for teenagers in March, said teen librarian Pam Carwell.
Carswell said she has missed seeing kids in person. Any time a teenager visits the library, Carswell said she makes a point to approach and talk about how things are going and what is available at the library. There is an area set aside for teens at the library and a lot of fun programming that hasn’t taken place due to the restrictions in place due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But restrictions have been eased somewhat due to the lower number of new cases. ....

Craig Dudnick is the director of the documentary “Alice’s Ordinary People.”
Alice Tregay was an ordinary person whose legacy of teaching and organizing in the Chicago area helped advance civil rights and likely set in motion the eventual election of President Barack Obama, said film director Craig Dudnick.
Dudnick’s 2012 documentary film “Alice’s Ordinary People” will be screened at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Minot Public Library. The showing of the film will be followed by a online presentation by Dudnick. The film is a public viewing that won’t be shown online. However, people will be able to view the virtual presentation by Dudnick from anywhere. ....
