The Millcreek Mall isn t just for stores anymore.
The newest mall tenant, which opens its doors Friday at noon, is 5 Wits, which describes itself as an interactive entertainment concept.
5 Wits, which opened its first location in Boston in 2004, takes pains to say what it isn t.
It s not an escape room, not exactly at least, according to the company s website, which explains: 5 Wits is similar to an escape room in that it is an interactive experience.
A statement from the Cafaro Company, owners of the Millcreek Mall, describes it this way: It’s not a game room. It’s not an escape room. It’s 15,000-square feet of puzzle-solving adventure. ....

Erie-area employers have jobs they can't fill

Bennett, the owner of Transportation Solutions, has jobs she can t fill.
Bennett, whose Millcreek Township company trains student drivers, wasn t surprised when three of her 15 employees chose not to come back to work this past spring following a six-week shutdown prompted by COVID-19 restrictions.
The former employees had health and family concerns. Bennett said she respected their decisions.
But she also expected she would be able to fill those jobs. After months of trying, that hasn t happened. It s a challenge to even get candidates to come in for interviews, she said.
The employment struggles she faces are familiar in many parts of Erie County, where business owners say there is a shortage of available workers. ....

As an emergency physician, Dr. Eugenia South was in the first group of people to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. She received her second dose last week – even before President-elect Joe Biden.
Yet South said she’s in no rush to throw away her face mask.
“I honestly don’t think I’ll ever go without a mask at work again,” said South, faculty director of the Urban Health Lab at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. “I don’t think I’ll ever feel safe doing that.”
And although vaccines are highly effective, South plans to continue wearing her mask outside the hospital as well. ....

Gov. Larry Hogan proposes Md. pass its own relief, stimulus checks

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan wants state lawmakers to pass a $1 billion COVID-19 economic relief bill that includes stimulus payments for about 400,000 eligible residents of the state.
The Republican said Monday that the bill, if passed, would provide a total of $267 million in stimulus money to individuals and families who qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit in 2019 and 2020.
Families would receive $750 and individuals would receive $450 under the RELIEF Act, which Hogan will ask legislators to pass when they convene for the first time in 2021 on Wednesday.
I cannot imagine anything that could possibly be more important for the legislature to pass, Hogan said. ....
