India and Myanmar on Wednesday inked an agreement on restoration of normalcy and development of the Rakhine State, from where thousands of Rohingya Muslims recently fled following incidents of violence against the community.
Signed between Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and Myanmar Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Soe Aung in Myanmar s capital Nay Pyi Taw, this is the first government to government pact inked by Myanmar with a cooperation partner focused on the socio-economic development and livelihood initiative

Myanmar’s long-delayed Dawei mega-project experienced yet another setback after contracts with Thailand’s construction giant Italian-Thai Development were canceled recently.
The ambitious, but controversial Dawei Special Economic Zone (DSEZ) project seeks to transform the sleepy coastal town into Southeast Asia’s largest industrial and trade zone – covering an area of about 200 square kilometers and incorporating a deep seaport the size of Thailand’s Laem Chabang.
Committed to repatriating Rohingyas as per 2017 deal: Myanmar

Myanmar has said they are committed to beginning the repatriation of Rohingyas as per the bilateral agreement signed with Bangladesh in 2017.
Myanmar s International Cooperation Affairs Minister Kyaw Tin conveyed this message to Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen in a recent letter.
The Myanmar minister also said they are committed to ensuring peaceful relations with all neighbours, including Bangladesh and resolving any problems peacefully.
Kyaw Tin said they want to resolve any bilateral issues with neighbours through mutual partnership.
He hoped to begin the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar soon through the tripartite talks held with Bangladesh, Myanmar and China on January 19.
Dhaka âcautiously optimisticâ of Rohingya repatriation from 2nd quarter this year

DHAKA, Jan 19, 2021 (BSS) â Dhaka became âcautiously optimisticâ to start much-demanded Rohingya repatriation from 2nd quarter of this year as Naypyidaw showed its flexibility to take back their nationals at todayâs tripartite meeting among Bangladesh, China and Myanmar over the crisis.
âIn diplomatic language, I can say â we are âcautiously optimisticâ (of starting repatriation by 2nd quarter of this year) ⦠we are sincerely engaged so that, at least, we can start the (repatriation) process,â foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen said here after the meeting.
The senior secretary, who led the Bangladesh delegation, was speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Ministry after the 90-minute virtual tripartite meeting this afternoon.
