Myanmar: Suu Kyi's trial took place without her lawyer, claim HRW


The trial of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi took place in secret on Tuesday without her lawyer present, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has told Euronews.
Suu Kyi was detained after the military staged a coup on February 1, claiming a recent election was rigged.
Court authorities had said Suu Kyi s trial was to take place on Wednesday but instead happened a day earlier, according to HRW.
The court and the prosecutors are pulling a fast one. Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch Asia told The Cube, Euronews social media newsdesk.
They told Aung San Suu Kyi s lawyer that it was going to be on Wednesday. He found out it was happening today, and by the time he got to the court it was already over. ....

A total of 220 people political prisoners have been detained since the Feb. 1 coup, including government officials, national leaders, election commissioners, political activists, monks, writers and peaceful demonstrators, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
More than half of those detained are from the National League for Democracy (NLD).
The party’s chairwoman, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and vice-chairs, President U Win Myint and Mandalay chief minister U Zaw Myint Maung, and nearly 50 senior NLD figures, including senior members and Union ministers, are among the detainees. At least 80 party members were also taken into detention by the military in the first nine days after the coup. ....

YANGON (The Straits Times/ANN): Tens of thousands of people in Myanmar marched in protest against the military coup for the second straight day on Sunday (Feb 7), as a partial restoration of Internet connection flooded Myanmar social media with images of the massive demonstrations.
“We want democracy!” the young crowd shouted in downtown Yangon, as they wove through cars stuck in the traffic and drivers blasted their horns in support.
Smaller protests also took place in Mandalay as well as Shan, Mon and Kayin states. The demonstrations were largely peaceful, with people holding up pictures of deposed state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi – detained by the military regime since the Feb 1 coup – and three-finger salutes as a symbol against dictatorship. ....
