MINEOLA, NY Traffic became snarled in downtown Mineola on Monday afternoon as firefighters responded to a fire at Winthrop Care Institutes on Mineola Boulevard, Nassau County police said.
The fire broke out just after 1:30 p.m. on the third floor of the six-story medical office building near NYU Langone Hospital Long Island, according to reports from first responders. The fire began inside a closet and was deemed electrical in nature, a police spokesman said.
No one was injured.

There were heavy traffic delays near Mineola Boulevard and First Street, according to Nassau County Traffic Management. The police department sent several police units to help with traffic control, as well as a police ambulance to the scene, a police spokesman said. ....

Twenty-one-year-old Andrew Desiderio, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering at Binghamton University, was killed in a hiking accident on Monday, according to a report in Binghamton University s Pipe Dream.
A GoFundMe page named the Andrew Desiderio Memorial Scholarship Fund was set up yesterday by Mary Desiderio. Instead of food or flowers, her family is urging members of the community to donate to a scholarship fund created in conjunction with Mineola High School to remember Desiderio, a former Eagle Scout who first joined the fire department when he was 13 years old, she wrote. ....
