Editorial — Schools get a heads-up: Districts, police agencies help students deal with trauma

The Norwood Police Department has partnered with two other law enforcement agencies and local school administrators on a national program in Northern New York designed to provide resources to children who may have endured recent trauma.
Norwood-Norfolk Central School District has worked with the Norfolk Police Department and St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office on the Handle With Care program. If police officers respond to a potentially traumatic situation involving a student, they would pass the child’s name to the district. School authorities could then make counseling services ready if needed, according to a model of the program in effect in various regions the country. ....

Norwood police join 'Handle With Care' program at Norwood-Norfolk Central School | Education

NORFOLK — The Norwood Police Department has joined with the Norfolk Police Department and St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office for a program that alerts Norwood-Norfolk Central School officials to any incident that may have impacted a student at home.
The “Handle With Care” program allows school officials to know that the involved children might be dealing with trauma or other issues the next day and may need to be handled with care.
If a police officer responds to a home and a school-aged child is present, they send Superintendent James Cruikshank an email with the child’s name.
“Nothing else, no details, just a message to Handle with Care. This provides us with the knowledge that a child may not be feeling themselves the next day, and we can approach any behaviors with care,” he said. ....

Massena village trustees agree to fill one of two Department of Public Works positions

MASSENA — The village Department of Public Works superintendent went one for two on his requests to fill two positions.
Hassan A. Fayad had recommended that Andrew Beaulieu be appointed as a backhoe operator and Thomas Blair as an assistant street foreman.
“That’s in the absence of the permanent street superintendent. This individual will fill in the gap during the other individual’s absence,” he told village trustees.
He said both positions had been held by a tenured employee who was not expected to return to work, leaving two in-house vacancies.
Mr. Fayad said they conducted interviews last week.
“Today we are presenting you with the recommendations of the people we believe have the best qualifications for the two vacant positions,” he said. ....

Massena village trustees asked to consider names to fill mayor vacancy

MASSENA — Village trustees hope to appoint a new mayor during their February meeting after current Mayor Timmy J. Currier tendered his resignation Tuesday. The resignation is effective Feb. 1.
Deputy Mayor Matthew J. LeBire told trustees during Tuesday’s meeting that village law dictates the actions they must take in the event of finding a replacement.
“It appears that we need to appoint a new mayor sometime soon. The timeframe is not indicated. As of Feb. 1, we will not have a mayor. Fortunately, village law really dictates where we head from here. Given that we just got the official resignation today and it’s not effective until Feb. 1, I would respectfully request that we take some time to think about how we’re going to approach this,” he said. ....

Wilson promoted to lieutenant in Massena Police Department

Saturday, January 2, 2021 - 4:18 pm
MASSENA A Massena Police Department sergeant has been promoted to lieutenant.
The village board voted on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to promote Sgt. Cody Wilson to lieutenant.
Chief Jason Olson had previously said the position is a working lieutenant, meaning Wilson will conduct investigations along with other duties that come with the position.
Acting Mayor Matt Lebire said he supports filling the lieutenant position, which had been left vacant to save money in response to anticipated shortfalls in sales tax revenue and state aid caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
We ve talked several times about this. we did keep this vacant for a bit for cost-saving measures. This is one area that we cannot cut wisely. It s too much of an issue the community is facing. We need to provide the appropriate funding and resources, Lebire said. ....
