Matamata-Piako District Council settles on 11.7 per cent rate increase

But District Mayor Ash Tanner said the rates are based on reality.
“We are playing catch up from last year when we proposed a 6.4 per cent rate increase.” Instead council opted for a zero increase to general rates in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I wouldn t like to put our ratepayers in a position in years to come facing 20 per cent increases, just to be popular,” Tanner said.
“Our challenge is now to deliver on the projects ahead.”
Over the next decade, council has approved some major projects for the district, including the Te Aroha Spa resort – its most significant approval at $18.9m –, additional water sources for Morrinsville, kerbside collection, resource recovery centres, revitalising town centres, a mountain bike skills and dog park for Te Aroha and a dog park for Matamata. ....

Dirt road residents plea for sealed roads ahead of during annual car rally

“It s not pleasant hearing the cars race past and all the dust and metal going everywhere, then we have to deal with the aftermath of our road when we return,” Allan told councillors at a recent council meeting.
“The dust settles on our roof, goes into our drinking water, and we have to wash down our gardens.”

Allan said residents that live further down the road have no problem with the roading.
“It’s just the first 3km that s the issue.
“Our battle is not with the rally club, we just want our section of the road sealed, for the health and safety of our families, workers and others.” ....

Million-dollar makeover still on the cards for Te Aroha Domain

Inside the beauty spa Te Aroha Domain is the Te Aroha Mineral Spas - renowned for their healing properties since the 1800s.
But District Mayor Ash Tanner didn’t forget about the proposal, announcing at the time council was still looking into ‘Plan B’.
Tanner said the new three part project needs to support a commercial venture, where income covers costs.
“The existing spa and hot pool business is successful but with only one treatment room it can’t meet demand,” Tanner said.
“Over the years Te Aroha has lost a lot of big business and it’d be great to have a drawcard like this for the town. ....
