Gruff Rhys The older I get, the more I have these vaguely dyslexic moments with regards to the names of products or people. This is something that happens with Welsh songwriter Gruff Rhys perhaps most associated with the band Super Furry Animals whom I confuse with British adventurer Bear Grylls, a man whose career, it might be said, puts him close contact with plenty of furry animals. So that doesn t help. Anyway, Gruff has mostly focused on a solo career over the last decade. Given his influence in Super Furry Animals, it s not surprising that he own material is very similar which is to say distinctive, lulling, vaguely dreamy rock. To me, he s like a latter-day Brian Wilson if the Beach Boy surfed over to Wales and embraced paganism. Seeking New Gods is a consistent and very enjoyable listen with tunes like Mausoleum of My Former Self, The Holiest of Holy Men and the quasi-hit Loan Me Your Loneliness warmly reminiscent of past work even as Gruff goe ....
The bleak Hollywood masterpiece that attacked fake news By Mark Allison26th May 2021 In the summer of 1951, Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole was released to harsh reviews. This unrivalled access was the defining feature of his lurid first-hand reports, which were printed and broadcast across the country. Death holds no terror for Floyd Collins, he told me tonight, more than 115 hours after he wa ....
/ Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) sells Joe Buck (Jon Voight) on contacting a would-be pimp in Midnight Cowboy. In 1969, an X-rated movie filmed in Texas and New York shocked the world when it became a sensation, capturing the number three spot at the year’s box office, and eventually winning an Oscar as Best Picture. “Midnight Cowboy” stars Jon Voight as Joe Buck, a naïve Texan who leaves his home in Big Spring to seek fortune in the Big Apple as a male hustler catering to affluent women. Things don’t go as planned. The hapless Joe strikes out time and again, winding up broke, turning small-time tricks on 42nd street. Along the way, he befriends a low-life named Ratso Rizzo, played by Dustin Hoffman, fresh off his successful debut in “The Graduate.” The two form an unlikely friendship that helps them survive the harsh reality of the big city. ....
