Updated 8/3/2021 7:10 PM
As new cases of COVID-19 surge and hospitalizations spike, Illinois public health experts are watching New York City s move to require proof of vaccination for entering indoor restaurants and gyms, but there s no plan for local governments to replicate it, officials said.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced the new rule that applies to people with at least one dose of vaccine and also includes indoor entertainment facilities with enforcement to begin Sept. 13. If you re unvaccinated, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in many things, de Blasio said.

For Illinois largest city, at this point we re interested in this. We ll be watching to see how this plays out (in New York). We do not have a current plan to do this, Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Allison Arwady said at a briefing. ....

New COVID-19 cases per capita: Kane County lowest in the region, Will County highest

Updated 8/2/2021 6:59 PM
DuPage County leads the six-county region for COVID-19 vaccinations but also owns a less desirable metric the third-highest number of new infections per capita, U.S. Centers for Disease Control records showed Monday.
The latest suburban data comes as public health officials scramble to get a handle on a new surge in COVID-19 cases attributable to the highly contagious delta variant that is mainly affecting unvaccinated people.

Will County has the most virus infections in the Chicago area with 89 new cases per 100,000 people between July 25 and Saturday, the CDC reported. The county ranks fifth out of six for vaccinations, with 72.3% of residents age 12 and older receiving at least one dose. Children ages 11 and younger are not eligible for shots yet. ....

Unvaccinated patients with COVID-19 trigger alert in DuPage, Kane

Updated 7/15/2021 7:02 PM
DuPage and Kane counties have been red-flagged by the Illinois Department of Public Health for rising COVID-19 hospitalizations, nearly all involving unvaccinated patients, officials said Thursday.
The Kane County Health Department is seeing a slight uptick in cases overall with 11 cases admitted to the hospital between July 8 and Wednesday all unvaccinated, agency spokeswoman Susan Stark said.

Also Thursday, Cook County leaders announced the three remaining mass vaccination sites, including one in Des Plaines, will close next week as the workload shrinks to 100 to 150 shots a day.
Instead, the county will shift to a hyperlocal approach to inoculate people in vulnerable minority communities as the highly infectious COVID-19 delta variant proliferates, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said. ....
