Big beasts — past and present | News, Sports, Jobs

Photos by Garry Brandenburg Bison are one of North America’s biggest and charismatic creatures of our prairie grassland heritage. It is hard to imagine the vast herds estimated to once be over 50 million animals scattered across the grassland prairies of our lower 48 states. But they did exist once upon a time..until settlement moved west and eliminated many of these mammals. Thanks to far a few far sighted people, remnant herds became the focus for conservation efforts. My images today feature a small portion of a bison herd at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge near Valentine, Nebraska. At their visitor center, a replica skull with long horn cores is on display for the extinct giant bison, Bison latifrons. And for comparison, at Green Castle is our modern day bison that local folks can go see. ....

Trumpeter swans take a time out | News, Sports, Jobs

Contributing Writer
Photos by Garry Brandenburg Last weeks super cold weather and new snow were just another day for wildlife. Today’s images show a group of Trumpeter Swans, adults and two young from last year, resting in a snow covered corn field west of Albion. And in the far background, those dark spots at timber edge are ten wild turkeys. While the swans were just waiting our the weather, turkeys were scratching through the snow cover to attempt to uncover tidbits of grain from last years harvest. As snow cover melts this week, the soil layers will become exposed allowing wildlife to find food more easily. A winter thawing weather break is welcome. ....

Eagle watching — Who is watching who? | News, Sports, Jobs

Contributing Writer
Photo by Garry Brandenburg Bald Eagle pairs are busy with eagle nesting duties. The time line started last fall with pair bonding. Now in mid February a nest site has likely already been selected, a new nest built, or a former nest remodeled, to prepare for mating and egg laying later this month. Egg laying can happen at the end of February. Eaglets hatch in late March or early April. There are approximately a dozen known eagle nests in Marshall County going into 2021.
EAGLE NEST WATCHING by people may be a later winter activity for some folks. Congratulations if you are one of those people inspired by this annual wildlife renewal story being played out near you. If you know where to look, an active eagle nest is not too far away from wherever you live. Observe from a distance with binoculars or a spotting scope. Enjoy your eagle observation forays. ....

Donate to Chickadee Checkoff | News, Sports, Jobs

This trumpeter swan pair are resident birds at the Green Castle Recreation Area. They hopefully will bring off a new brood of cygnets this summer. In the meantime, winter season is hunker-down season, to hang out and take it easy, and to go with the flow of whatever winter weather events Mother Nature throws at them. Swan bodies are covered in over 5,000 feathers. And those feathers do a great job of insulating the bird’s body from heat loss. Swans restoration in Iowa is a conservation success story in part because of donations Iowans have made in the past via their Iowa tax returns. Donations to the Fish/Wildlife Fund, also known as the “Chickadee Checkoff” continues to be a huge benefit for many non-game species. ....

Frost decorates the landscape | News, Sports, Jobs

Contributing Writer
PHOTOS BY GARRY BRANDENBURG Frost on the morning of January 3rd revealed a transformed appearance to everything on the landscape. With warmer air flowing over cold snow covered ground, atmospheric conditions were just right with temperature/dew points close together allowing freezing fog to form. It would be safe to say that lots of photographs were made of this Mother Nature inspired event across the entire Midwest. So here are my offerings: the Iowa River upstream from Indian Bridge, and a tree with the Moon in the sky. Can you see it?
FROST COVERED everything last weekend. It was an opportunity to get outside to record the event with my camera. It did not take long to appreciate how complete transformation of tthe landscape was. Every blade of tall grass, every branch of every bush and shrub, and every branch, twig and retained leaf on every tree was fluffed up with white decorations of frost. Those frost crystals grew well overnight to exponential ....
