Camera at the Mart: return to shipping helps prices in Kanturk

Kanturk Mart hosted its weekly calf sale on Tuesday, attracting an entry of 500 calves.
Disruptions in sailings earlier in the month resulted in a drop in price across the country for the export type of Friesian bull, but with sailings returning last weekend, prices have been very strong.
This 22-day-old Simmental bull calf sold for €290.
Prices for Friesians in Kanturk ranged from €30 to €170, but the majority sold between €55 and €115. Any lots falling below this €55 mark were either very light or displayed strong Holstein traits.
The stylish 24-day-old Blue heifer sold for €330.
For the month of March, Kanturk Credit Union sponsored a class for best of breed each week. ....

Nenagh dairy sale attracts top prices

This two-and-a-half-year-old heifer calved two days previous and sold for €2,500.
Central Auctions Nenagh Mart hosted their annual spring dairy show and sale last Thursday with some top lots securing exceptional prices.
A top price tag of €2,900 was hit on two occasions with overall sale average resting at over €1,800.
Speaking after the sale mart manager Michael Hearty said: “There’s huge demand at the moment for the top-quality calved heifers and for the right type buyers are willing to give a great price.
This week calved 29-month-old Friesian heifer sold for €2,640.
“We were lucky to have a good selection of these heifers on offer and they made the price. The online is definitely helping with buyers on Thursday from right across the country.” ....

Carrigallen Mart held its annual show and sale of heifers on Thursday last.
The sale saw 400 heifers go under the hammer, with a strong demand for factory-fit heifers, as well as heifers suitable for grazing.
Top-quality cattle were in demand, with the top price hitting €4,100 for a 710kg Charolais-cross heifer.
The sale champion sold for €2,020 at 665kg, while a second-prizewinning heifer sold for €3,000 at 650kg.
Price extremes
Mart manager Helen Kells said: “The in-calf heifer and fatstock scene has driven the price of the top of the range cattle to extremes in the past 12 months.
“It’s a massive boost for producers and our suppliers to have these customers willing to go the distance on the right animals.” ....

Demand for slaughter-fit sheep is showing no signs of easing, with factories even more anxious to get their hands on higher numbers.
This was evident in a sharp trade in Athenry Mart, Co Galway, on Monday, with factory agents, butcher and wholesale buyers digging in and competing hard for fleshed hoggets.
The hammer fell on the top-priced pen of top-quality hoggets weighing 51kg at €178.
In total, 13 lots reached or exceeded the €170 mark, with the average price of these recorded at almost €174 for hoggets weighing in the main from 55kg to 60kg. ....
