Rathfriland Mart held its weekly cattle sale last Friday, with 110 drop calves and runners, 100 weanlings, 20 heifers and 60 bullocks through the ring. The sale was conducted through the Irish Farmers Journal online bidding platform MartBids.ie. There was also limited ringside bidding in line with COVID-19 protocols. Calves and runners Calves have been in great demand all spring, according to mart manager Jim McCrum. “Last week’s trade was slightly back on the previous week, but there was still a great demand for calves,” he said. Aberdeen Angus-cross heifer calves averaged £183/head (€212/head), with Hereford-bred calves averaging £213/head (€247/head). Crossbred Friesian bull calves averaged £108/head (€125/head). ....

Factory-fit cows are well up, according to Jody, with good-quality cows €100/head dearer than the week previous. This was primarily driven by factory buyers with increased demand this week. ....

However, there is a spread of prices, as some slaughterhouses try to increase their prices at a more modest rate. This sharp rise would indicate a tightening of supply at a time when numbers are typically available. Last year’s higher heifer kill looks to have dropped back to the level we have become accustomed to in previous years. This upturn can be seen in the official Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) prices for the week ending 13 March. An R4L grading steer is priced at £3.93/ kg, which is up 5p/kg. Same-grade heifers were £3.95/kg, which is up 6p on the week. The young bull price is up 5p/kg to £3.79/kg. ....
