The federal government tried to stop the publication of an academic paper that found it needed to drastically increase its spending on threatened Australian wildlife.
Internal documents released to Guardian Australia under freedom of information laws show senior officials in the federal environment department spent months pressuring the scientists from the government-funded Threatened Species Recovery Hub.
The scientists had drafted a paper in 2019 that compared Australian threatened species funding with that in the US. They found Australia was spending just a tenth of what the US dedicated to trying to recover endangered wildlife. ....

Deforestation taking a heavy toll on international bird haven

Credit: Pablo Negret
An analysis has found deforestation is severely affecting forest bird species in Colombia, home to the greatest number of bird species in the world.
University of Queensland-led research, steered by Dr Pablo Negret, analysed the impact of deforestation on 550 bird species, including 69 only found in the South American nation.
Our study has shown an astonishing reduction in bird species habitat, Dr Negret said.
One third of the forest bird species in Colombia have lost at least a third of their historical habitat, and that s just using the most recent data we have available - from 2015.
Moreover, 18 per cent or 99 species have lost more than half of their historical habitat to date. ....

Rare birds are being pushed out of their habitats in Colombia, which is home to more bird species than any other place on the planet. A new study from the University of Queensland shows that deforestation is increasingly destroying the historical habitats of hundreds of types of birds.
The investigation was focused on the impact of deforestation on 550 bird species, including 69 species that are only found in Colombia.
“Our study has shown an astonishing reduction in bird species habitat,” said study lead author Dr. Pablo Negret.”One third of the forest bird species in Colombia have lost at least a third of their historical habitat, and that’s just using the most recent data we have available – from 2015.” ....

Morrison government flouts own review by proposing 'watered down' environmental standards

The Morrison government is preparing to reject a recommendation it introduce strong national environmental standards to improve protection of Australian wildlife, opting to instead mimic the failing existing laws.
A document, seen by Guardian Australia, sets out the proposed standards the government will introduce to underpin its plan to transfer environmental decision-making powers to state and territory governments.
The standards have been given to Senate crossbenchers, as well as industry and environment groups, as the government looks to build support for its environmental streamlining bill in the Senate. ....

Crikey Worm: I am once again masking for your support

TENNIS THE MENACE?
Victoria has reintroduced mandatory indoor mask rules and limits of 15 people for private gatherings after a 26-year-old quarantine worker tested positive to a potential COVID-19 variant, with the ABC adding that a plan to allow up to 75% of workers back into offices from Monday has also been paused.
The resident support officer for the Australian Open quarantine program had returned a negative result after finishing their shift at the Grand Hyatt on Friday January 29, but later developed symptoms.
Speaking at a 10.30pm press conference,
Dan Andrews urged anyone in the state with symptoms or who had visited an exposure site to get tested and self-isolate. Victoria’s health department lists potential contact sites for the man, who also volunteers with the Country Fire Authority Noble Park and had attended at least one CFA event, as: ....
