A new strategy to save Australia’s threatened species will not be enough to correct the government’s “appalling record” on protecting the country’s unique and at-risk wildlife, according to leading conservation groups.
The federal environment minister, Sussan Ley, on Friday released the new 10-year strategy, saying the the government plans to broaden its responses from individual species to “priority places”.
Ley said the government wants to see “protection of a more diverse range of species, including reptiles, amphibians, freshwater species, marine species”. The government is developing the first of two five-year “action plans” to underpin the strategy. ....

Scientists and environment groups are urging the government not to remove the humpback whale from Australia’s list of threatened species because of growing threats, including from the climate crisis.
The federal government is considering delisting the humpback whale, which is categorised as vulnerable under national environmental laws, due to the recovery of populations since the end of whaling.
The government’s discussion paper estimates whaling reduced humpback whale populations off eastern Australia from 26,133 to 200-500 by 1962. ....

Experts warn the Morrison government’s proposed environmental approvals watchdog lacks the necessary powers to fix ongoing failures in the major project approval system.
Environment Minister Sussan Ley lodged a bill with Parliament on Thursday to hand the Commonwealth’s powers under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to state governments, to make the assessment system for developers more efficient.
