Despite most of the $1.28 million mistakenly paid to the state being returned, the error was again a topic of controversy for the Marion City Council. During Monday s council committee meeting, Deputy Auditor Marden Watts said $1.1 million has been returned to the City of Marion after it was mistakenly paid to the state instead of the IRS. Watts added that the request to get the additional $184,000 has been submitted and is awaiting to be processed, although it could take three months before it is deposited. ....
After an oversight caused payments to go to the wrong account, Marion taxpayers could be footing the bill for the penalty. The Marion City Auditor s Office mistakenly paid $1.28 million in federal taxes to the state of Ohio that was meant for the IRS, said City Auditor Robert Landon during Monday s City Council Meeting. Though the money has since been paid to the IRS to cover the bill, the money paid to the state has not been returned yet. Landon said this happened because the payment company the city uses to set up the accounts wrongfully sent over the state s account number instead of the IRS account number. As a result, the auditor s office is working with the state to recover the money. Deputy Auditor Marden Watts said they are working with the law director about potential legal actions regarding the payment company, but will wait to move forward once they are able to determine the amount of loss caused by this. ....
