Letter: What about the killer’s victim? Published: 1/27/2021 12:02:34 AM Jonathan Baird never mentions the victim in his latest column about how cruel the death penalty was for Lisa Montgomery ( Monitor Opinion, Jan. 23). This is typical when someone is arguing against the death penalty. The victim or victims are not a consideration. Their closure doesn’t matter. He states there was no careful consideration about Montgomery’s fate. Where does he get this idea from? Years on death row and thousands of dollars in litigation, housing, and medical and mental evaluations isn’t “mindless vengeance,” as he states. He also never mentions how her victim was killed and how her body was slashed open to steal her baby. Maybe this gruesome act would have softened his argument. He argues the murderer was mentally ill – and I argue that makes all murderers more dangerous. ....

My Turn: Creche represents real meaning of Christmas I would like to respond to the “My Turn” column by Jack Shields ( Monitor Opinion, Dec. 14) regarding the creche on the city plaza. I have seen the creche since I was a young child when my parents would take my sister and I down to North Main Street on the day after Thanksgiving to see the beautiful lights on the street poles, the big Christmas Tree, and the Nativity scene. I notice in his article he didn’t mention the menorah in front of the State House for those celebrating Hanukkah. For many years the Concord Council of Churches and the downtown businesses sponsored the creche, along with the holiday lights and tree. I represented Merrimack County Pomona Grange, a nonprofit organization dedicated to agriculture and community service for over 150 years, when we voted to offer to take over the creche, as it had been a part of the display since 1951.
