This all dates back to 2019 when reports emerged that Tesla owners were experiencing serious driving range drops following a software update. Only the Tesla Model S and Model X were affected, and just those equipped with 85-kWh battery packs. That specific trim was discontinued in 2016 but Tesla still continued with over-the-air updates which makes complete sense. What allegedly happened as a result of one of those updates was a loss of 12 to 30 miles of range.
Affected owners weren t limited to a single country but a group of them banded together to take the matter to court. Electrek reports a Norwegian court has ordered Tesla to pay $16,000 to every affected owner in the country. ....

The incident raised new concerns about Autopilot as firefighters on the scene found that neither of the two occupants on board was in the driver s seat. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has now released its preliminary report into the accident but emphasizes that the investigation is ongoing and no final conclusions should yet be drawn from the crash. An issue that should never have taken this long to resolve has finally been concluded. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Tesla have agreed to recall a total of 134,951 Tesla Model S and Model X electric vehicles due to touchscreen failure. The recall affects the 2012-2018 Model S and 2016-2018 Model X. The government safety agency began investigating the problem last June after receiving over 12,000 owner complaints and other related information submitted by the automaker itself.
Tesla has decided to voluntarily recall certain Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018 that are equipped with an 8GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) in the media control unit because the eMMC may malfunction due to accumulated wear, the automaker formally stated. ....

A technical issue that dates back to 2012 continues to haunt Tesla and now the US government is getting involved. Last November, the California-based automaker acknowledged there are serious technical issues involving the Media Control Unit (MCU) touchscreen on the 2012 to 2015 Tesla Model S and Model X. In, short a number of touchscreens began to fail, rendering vehicles almost completely useless. Without working screens, drivers cannot control a variety of basic functions.
Complicating matters further for owners was that Tesla claimed the issue wasn t covered under warranty. Because of the increasing blowback, Tesla changed course and issued extended warranties for the older MCU unit but refused to issue a recall. US safety regulators believe it should. ....

In his investigations, the user who simply goes by green claims that Model S and X vehicles with firmware 2020.48 and up now have the allowance for something referred to as service key . It s the same field in the coding used on the 3 and Y for phone keys and key cards, but the space where this code is found was previously empty for the larger pair of Tesla EVs. His digging revealed that the code is identical across all models and appears to be hardcoded. It can t be removed, either, as when he tried deleting the string of code, it simply reverted back to the original coding.
