Having spent my youth north of the Mason-Dixon Line, there are times here in the not-so Deep South when I long for the sights, the tastes and the smells of âhome.â One of these is the âmom and popâ neighborhood delicatessen and bakery that my family regularly frequented. Curious, I checked back the other day and found that its ownership had passed from parents to the son who transformed the deli that I and my family knew into ⦠well, they have gas pumps out front, if thatâs any indication. Fortunately for me, Johnson City has a new business that lays claim to being our âburgâs first Jewish deli-bakery, West Walnut Streetâs Crumb Bakeshop. ....
Having called it home since its construction in 1978, the Johnson City/Jonesborough/Washington County Chamber of Commerce is now selling its building on East Market Street for $495,000. The building, at 603 E. Market St., was placed on the market on June 21. Chamber CEO Bob Cantler said he hopes the organization will move to its new home on the first floor of the Model Mill by the end of the year. Cantler said the Chamber is currently working with Thomas Weems Architects to get its new space move-in ready. The buildout could take three to four months. âIt will be a state-of-the-art destination,â Cantler said. ....
Earlier this month, Johnson City commissioners approved a $30.5 million contract to makeover a section of West Walnut Street. Itâs a big project, and the price tag seems especially hefty when Washington County is hinting at the possibility of a property tax increase, but the city has been planning this corridorâs revitalization for years. An important link between East Tennessee State University and the cityâs downtown core, private business activity has already picked up on the portion of West Walnut between University Parkway and Buffalo Street.
