In early December, the Canton Police Department had as many as 16 officers out due to COVID. And so far in 2021, only one Canton police officer out of the 169 in the department (plus another 53 other city police employees) has been able to get a dose of the vaccine, Chief Jack Angelo said. The one who did was on a waiting list in another county. Ohio last month decided not to follow federal recommendations to make police officers an immediate vaccination priority, dashing Angelo s hopes of getting his police force inoculated quickly. With police officers regularly being off sick and higher crime levels, Angelo fears officers forced to work extended hours could burn out. He said he can t put more than one officer in a squad car until the officer and their partner are vaccinated. ....
The Independent MASSILLON Brian Sifferlin didn t hesitate when Massillon City Schools officials asked if he wanted the COVID-19 vaccine. He was the first staff member at Washington High School to get the shot on Monday. The city Health Department provided 130 doses to high school employees and another 30 to staff at the administrative building. Earlier next week, the agency will vaccinate about 180 staff members at the district s three elementary schools as well as at St. Mary and St. Barbara catholic schools and Massillon Christian School. Wednesday meeting DISCUSSION: Superintendent Paul Salvino said the rollout of vaccines for staff members is set to begin Feb. 1. District officials have been in ongoing conversations with the Massillon Health Department since the pandemic began and were set to meet Thursday to discuss more details on how the immunization will be administered. A few buildings are set to get the shots Feb. 1 followed by the remaining staff members, he said. Plans call for health department staff to come to the schools to give the vaccine. The collaboration with the Massillon City Health Department has been so amazing, he said. Since March when all this jumped off there has been countless conversations with (Director) Terri (Argent) and others. ....
Jackson Township Fire Chief Tracy Hogue said his arm wasn t even sore after he received a COVID-19 vaccine shot. It was easy, and I would encourage people to take it, he said. I think it could be the beginning of the end of this. Hogue and several other local health and fire officials said the number of first responders who opted to receive the initial shot in the past few weeks has been better than expected. The Jackson Township Fire Department had 60 people about 66% opt to participate in the two-shot Moderna vaccine administered by local health departments. Only one employee had mild symptoms the next day, Hogue said. ....
The Independent MASSILLON The city Health Department is in line for an unspecified amount of COVID-19 vaccinations that will soon be available to folks categorized as Tier 1 individuals. Health Director Terri Argent said a small shipment of vaccines is expected to be received next week. Those designated as direct patient-care providers will be the first to get them. We won t know how many we get until they arrive, said Argent, noting that she and others among her eight-member staff are slated to receive a vaccine. For my staff, it will be those working at the clinics (to administer the vaccine to the public), she added. ....
