$3.3M grant to fuel response to post-pandemic challenges

LOWELL, Mass. - A group of Massachusetts research institutions and organizations led by UMass Lowell has received a $3.3 million federal grant to continue its efforts to ensure the Commonwealth is prepared to face the ongoing challenges of COVID-19, future pandemics and other public health crises.
Through UMass Lowell, the project has been awarded a $3.3 million CARES Act grant by the U.S. Department of Commerce s Economic Development Administration (EDA). The funding will go to continue the production of personal protective equipment (PPE), expand into other medical supplies, devices and equipment, and to develop related training and curriculum with the goal of creating new jobs and economic opportunities following the pandemic. ....

Ben Linville-Engler, MIT System Design and Management (SDM) industry and certificate director, is the 2021 recipient of the Collier Medal. The Collier Medal was established in 2014 to honor MIT Police Officer Sean Collier and his commitment to community engagement and model citizenship. It is among the highest honors that MIT awards to staff and community members. Linville-Engler exemplifies these values and has demonstrated his own dedication to MIT and broader communities throughout his career.  
In spring 2020, as the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 to be an official pandemic and case numbers rose in Massachusetts, many different groups and individuals across MIT and the Commonwealth sought ways to help. Health firm wins final COVID challenge


NORTH ADAMS — Keva Health, of Lexington, bested five other firms, including a company from Stockbridge, to finish first Friday in the Connect Tech Innovation Challenge produced by the startup accelerator and innovation network Lever.
It was the fourth and final event in a series of COVID-19 challenges produced by Lever that focused on state companies developing products to help stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Edgi Learning, of Stockbridge, was one of the six companies that had been selected as a finalist for the competition.
Keva CEO and founder Jyotsna Mehta was awarded the $40,000 first-place prize bestowed on the winner of the final pitch contest, as determined by a panel of judges. Thrive Community, of Boston, received $10,000 for finishing second. ....
