Punjab, the next battleground | Dialogue

March 14, 2021
The game of musical chairs continues: PML-Q desperately wants to grab the power seat, whilst PML-N and PPP are willing to oust the government albeit with different approaches
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced that the Punjab is the “next battleground” now that the opposition alliance has won the Senate seat for Islamabad. The PPP sounds confident after Yousaf Raza Gillani’s victory. According to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the PPP chairperson, the next move is to get rid of the Buzdar government through a no-confidence motion. But the battle in the Punjab is expected to be more complex and challenging for the PDM than for the Buzdar government. ....

LAHORE :
Thousands of women across the country defied the coronavirus pandemic and took part in annual marches and rallies to mark International Women’s Day, calling for social justice, equal rights and end to what they called “pandemic of patriarchy” in a deeply conservative society.
International Women’s Day is observed globally on March 8. This year, however, it remained a muted affair due to the pandemic-induced restrictions on large gatherings. In Pakistan, women came out in large numbers in major urban centres to take part in ‘Aurat Azadi March’ which has become a synonym for women’s struggle for their rights in the country. ....

Karachi (Agenzia Fides) - “The working style of the National Commission for Minorities has so far been unsatisfactory. The themes of the meetings have not been made public so far and there are members of the Committee who are not official. Furthermore, the Commission is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interreligious Harmony, and thus lacks the necessary independence , says Kashif Aslam, Deputy Director of Projects of the Justice and Peace Commission (CCJP) in the Catholic Bishops Conference. ....

Senate election: A close contest | Dialogue

March 7, 2021
With Yousaf Raza Gilani’s win against Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the Senate elections, the PTI’s confidence seems to be plummeting
The theatrics around the Senate elections have finally concluded with a rather surprise end. Despite strenuous efforts of the ruling party, the PTI government failed to secure a seat for Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh as the former prime minister and joint candidate of Pakistan Democratic Movement Yousuf Raza Gillani defeated him with a thin margin of five votes.
Although a close contest was expected, given the PTI majority in the National Assembly, most political pundits were predicting a victory for Hafeez Shaikh with a margin of 5 to 20 votes. Surprisingly Gillani polled 169 votes, while Shaikh bagged 164. Seven votes cast for this general seat from Islamabad were rejected. However, on the women’s seat from Islamabad, PTI’s candidate Fauzia Arshad had a smooth sailing, defeating her opponent and PDM candidat ....
