The future of #auslaw is female The future of #auslaw is female Share Following the release of the fifth annual National Profile of Solicitors report, Lawyers Weekly spoke to four female legal executives on what more the industry can do for women, as well as where they see the future of females in #auslaw. As previously reported by Lawyers Weekly, women now make up the majority of solicitors in the country. Female solicitors outnumber male solicitors in the government, corporate and community legal sectors; and comprise 48 per cent of solicitors in private practice. The report also found that since 2011, the number of female solicitors entering the legal industry has increased by 67 per cent, compared to a 26 per cent increase of men entering the industry. ....

However, while Australia’s legal profession has never been bigger and women have never made up such a large percentage of that profession, the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lawyers has not increased. Indeed, the share of Indigenous solicitors hasn’t changed since 2014 it remains at 0.8 of a percentage point. In 2016, there was a slight increase in the proportion of Indigenous solicitors (rising to 1.2 per cent), before slumping to 0.7 of a percentage point in 2018 and then stabilising at 0.8 of a percentage point this past year. ....
10 July 2021 A push to trial no trace waste at the Green Point Reserve in Marrawah has been met with severe concerns by locals, who say that the current system is already overloaded as it is. Currently there are five wheelie bins present at the Green Point Reserve, which features a carpark, barbecue shelter, playground and toilets at the beach’s access point. These wheelie bins are emptied fortnightly and locals avoid using them as they almost invariably end up full well ahead of collection, according to local Kay McElrae. “Sometimes there’s not enough space for the rubbish that we pick up walking on the beach so we take it home with us,” she said. ....
