Following the release of the fifth annual
National Profile of Solicitors report, Lawyers Weekly spoke to four female legal executives on what more the industry can do for women, as well as where they see the future of females in #auslaw.
As previously reported by Lawyers Weekly, women now make up the majority of solicitors in the country. Female solicitors outnumber male solicitors in the government, corporate and community legal sectors; and comprise 48 per cent of solicitors in private practice.
The report also found that since 2011, the number of female solicitors entering the legal industry has increased by 67 per cent, compared to a 26 per cent increase of men entering the industry. ....

IWD, Christian Porter and Lawyer X: Looking back on the fortnight
By Naomi Neilson|08 March 2021
In this Protégé fortnightly news brief, we’re bringing you the most important updates that law students, graduates and other young lawyers should be across.
1:
Happy International Women’s Day! Unfortunately, for young, female lawyers entering the profession, it means starting with the same (if not worse) gender pay gap and in a legal workplace dominated by men. While some firms may boast that there are a ton of changes underway to make it an equal environment, Australian Women Lawyers president Leah Marrone cautions them to think again. We also talked to a barrister on her experiences and checked in with the biggest firms.  ....

'Gobsmacking': What the profession has to say about the Porter allegations

‘Gobsmacking’: What the profession has to say about the Porter allegations
By Naomi Neilson|04 March 2021
The legal profession has responded to Christian Porter’s denial of rape allegations, with some calling for an independent inquiry and others cautioning that the message of his press conference is that he “gets to say he’s innocent” and that’s the end of it.
Appearing tearfully before a gallery of Perth journalists, the federal Attorney-General strongly and repeatedly denied allegations that he raped a woman 33 years ago after a debating competition. He implored those watching to “imagine for a second that it’s not true” and blamed the media with claims that they never approached him before print.  ....

The Morrison Government rape scandals continue unabated today. Yesterday’s confession and denial by Attorney-General Christian Porter has done nothing to quell the outrage. Indeed, it has swelled as righteous calls for an independent inquiry explode. At Crikey, the late accusing woman’s lawyer, Michael Bradley, demands it:
The criminal justice route is closed. There will never be a determination as to whether Porter is guilty of a crime, beyond reasonable doubt. In that context, the presumption of his innocence is permanently fixed.
However, this fact remains: he is the attorney-general, the first law officer of the Commonwealth, a cabinet minister, and member of the Executive Council which advises the Queen through her agent the governor-general. He has access to the highest level of classified information and participates in the decisions made by the most powerful ruli ....
