United Way closes on Be A Hero goal

HANNIBAL — The United Way of the Mark Twain Area is closing in on its $425,000 goal for the 2020-21 Be a Hero Campaign. Denise Damron, executive director of the United Way of the Mark Twain Area, announced on April 1 a major push called “40 Days for $40,000” to help meet the aggressive campaign goal. As of Friday, United Way reported the Be A Hero Campaign is within $14,000 of making goal. “United Way through our donors and volunteers works in the community to create opportunities for individuals to give of their time, talents and treasures to make the community a better place for all,” Damron said. “The COVID-19 pandemic created challenges for all the agencies that our donors help support.”

Douglass Community Services receives county's support for grant

STAFF REPORT PALMYRA, Mo. — Marion County is supporting Douglass Community Services’ efforts to find a more spacious location from which to operate. Stephanie Cooper, administrator of DCS, met with the Marion County Commissioners during their Monday, April 12, meeting at the county courthouse in Palmyra to provide an update on DCS’ need to expand. Cooper explained that DCS has outgrown its current facility and needs a larger location. Cooper reported that the city of Hannibal has already applied for a Community Development Block Grant for use on other items, and thus cannot submit an additional request. Cooper asked if the commissioners would be willing to submit a CDBG application on DCS’ behalf. The commissioners agreed unanimously to submit a grant application in behalf of DCS.
