HEALTH COMMENTARY: Covid cases in Red River Valley region remain low

Covid remains low at Paris Regional Medical Center, with just four Covid-infected people inpatient daily over the last week. In the community, our new active cases are around five to 10 a day, which still puts us at a 45 to 50 weekly count (under 10 considered good control). The panhandle is experiencing a rise in cases, and Southeastern Oklahoma still has county cases greater than 200.
At least 17% of the population in the U.S. is thought to be vaccinated (84 million have received one dose). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that Covid-vaccinated people may travel in the U.S. without getting tested or self-quarantining, but should still wear a mask in public areas, avoid crowds and practice hand hygiene. While having the vaccine protects the individual, we still wear masks at this point as there are still people in the community without immunity who can be infected. There have been no deaths and no signs of increased illness (other than brief appropri ....

How does Montana determine COVID-19 vaccine allocations?

HELENA, Mont. – Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson the state of Montana is receiving more and more of all three FDA-approved vaccines. However, the question becomes, how does the state decide where to send these vaccines? Which cities get J&J? Which get Pfizer? Which get Moderna?
It all comes down to population. The larger populated cities and counties get more of the Pfizer vaccine, because they have the freezer capacities for the shots.
The Pfizer shots are ordered in sizes of 1,170 doses, which means they are sent to the higher populated counties and cities, and can get distributed a lot quicker into arms. The Moderna shot is only ordered in sizes of 100, which means that shot goes to more rural, and harder to reach areas of Montana. The Moderna shot also has the cold temperature special storage requirement, which helps with rural distribution, something the state has kept a close eye on. ....

Can you get COVID if you have been vaccinated?

Many of you at home have asked in response to Governor Greg Gianforte testing positive if you can get COVID if you’ve been vaccinated.
It s important to note that the governor was vaccinated with the first dose last week. It takes some time before you develop full protection and immunity from COVID.
The CDC says two weeks after the second dose in a two-dose series, for the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine.
It’s rare that after people have received both doses to test positive, one study out of Chicago shows out of 392,000 vaccinated patients about 100 people tested positive after getting to the point of full protection. ....
