Va. has hit 4 million vaccines administered, but majority of state remains at 'very high risk' of contracting COVID

SABRINA MORENO Richmond Times-Dispatch
Virginia hit four million vaccines administered over the weekend, doubling the total number of shots reported between Dec. 14 and March 5 in 31 days.
Although 1 in 3 Virginians have received at least one dose — indicating the state’s vaccine rollout has found its stride — 1 in 3 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 are in an intensive care unit and 1 in 8 patients are on a ventilator, a rough gauge of severe illness.
Since last month, ventilator use has remained the same while the number of residents in an ICU on any given day has increased.
These figures mean even as vaccinations slow the virus’ impact, and there are fewer restrictions for the 1.5 million residents fully vaccinated, the pandemic is not over. ....

'The Walking Dead' Season Finale Delivers a Powerful Origin Story for Negan (RECAP) | Entertainment

Except he doesn’t make it home. A biker gang intercepts him and ties him to a chair, demanding he tell them where to find the doctor he had just met (the implication here is that they’re after drugs). Negan, left with no choice, caves and shows them where to find the duo on a map. Negan’s soon free to leave — and as he goes, he hears Laura screaming.
If you’ve watched this show for any length of time, you’ve guessed what becomes of Lucille. While Negan is gone, she dies and turns; he finds a message on the door to their bedroom that reads, “Please don’t leave me like this.” She’d tied herself to the bed to keep herself from hurting him, and he sits by her walker for a long time and then he burns the house down, with her inside it. ....

ETSU group works to vaccinate homeless

Across the nation, people experiencing homelessness are often left out of states’ COVID-19 vaccine rollout plans — including Tennessee’s.
That left the task of vaccinating the state’s nearly 7,500 homeless people up to clinics and other groups in communities across the state, even though people experiencing homelessness, particularly those who are unsheltered, are considered higher risk for COVID-19 due to myriad factors including age and underlying health conditions.
For the hundreds of people without homes in Northeast Tennessee, it meant they were once again left out in the cold.
That’s why the East Tennessee State University Street Medicine Interest Group, or SMIG, an inter-professional group of students formed in 2019 to help the region’s homeless population, stepped in. On Saturday, March 20, they administered 20 doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at a pop-up event outside Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. ....

Transition Cow Management: Much More Than Just Diet

As I mentioned in one of my previous articles, the transition period is one of, if not the, most challenging period for dairy cows during their production cycle.
During this time, cows experience four main physiological challenges: a drop in dry matter intake, an increase in nutrient demands, immunosuppression, and systemic stress and inflammation (especially around calving).
Therefore, the best approach to manage this group of animals is by addressing these challenges.
If we think about the drop in intake and the increase in nutrient needs, the main negative effects are animals getting into a negative energy balance (because they are using more nutrients than what they are consuming) and developing metabolic diseases such as ketosis and fatty liver. ....

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
BY KEITH ROACH, M.D.
-
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had low GFR readings ranging from 53 to 37 for the past 15 years. I m an 87-year-old female in good health. I do strength training and Pilates, and am quite active walking my dog and doing my own yardwork. I ve had heart disease for 10 years with no symptoms, and echocardiograms are normal.
My cholesterol runs around 180, and my blood pressure fluctuates from 137/68 to 150/75. I take lovastatin and lisinopril daily. My doctor is not concerned about my numbers as long as there are no significant spikes or drops, and he stresses the importance of drinking plenty of water. When I m extremely sore I will take an Aleve tablet, only once during a four- to six-week period, as I know NSAIDs are not good for the kidneys, especially with readings like mine. I sometimes take an occasional Tylenol. ....
