Efforts are being made by opponents to earlier start times for grade school students to hold a referendum to overturn school start time changes.
Earlier grade school start times comes as a consequence of later start times for New Canaan High School students.
The referendum awaits the first step, having language crafted for “a notice of intent to petition,” which needs to be signed by at least 50 electors of the town to be filed in the town clerk’s office. ....

Town councilmen want to ensure the town spends efficiently, even though they are the last to see the budget and can only reduce it, according to town charter.
Chairman John Engel explained to the council on Wednesday, Jan. 20, how the U.S. Army maintains spending efficiencies.
“If I was the army battalion commander I would have A company, B company, C company and D company. And I look at each of their budgets,” Engel said. ....
